  • Kalki 2898 AD | My Take

… and on Ranbir Kapoor -Sai Pallavi starrer Ramayan

    Only at Filmcontentcentral

With Kalki 2898 AD, the Prabhas – Amitabh Bachchan – Deepika Padukone starrer out on OTT this week ( in Hindi on Netflix and in Telugu, Tamil, and other languages on Prime Video), here’s my take on the movie.

Also, with Nitish Tiwari directing Ramayan in the Hindi movie industry, we have Ranbir Kapoor too join the spate of films based on mythology.

Do you think this Ramayan will work, after the debacle that was Om Raut’s Adipurush?

  • GOAT Movie

    Trailer Reaction

The GOAT movie trailer on YouTube

    Vijay is back. Thalpathy Vijay.

His movie, perhaps his last before he plunges full time into politics, directed by Venkat Prabhu, will be out soon.

And the trailer is now out on YouTube.

The movie also stars Prashant, Mohan, Prabhu Deva, Laila, Jayaram & Sneha, and features Vijay in what seems like a triple role.

De-aging technology has been used to make the actor look younger, and the VFX is questionable.

The movie looks to be based on a premise based on some sort of time travel or something to that effect, there is a hint of some similarity to Gemini Man.

Here’s my full reaction to the trailer.

  • Iconic Movie Posters -2

A movie poster is perhaps the first look (and in the olden days, perhaps the only look) the audience has at what they should expect from a new movie. Now of course, we have teasers, trailers to trailers and what not.

We’ve seen five iconic posters in Part 1 of this article.

Let’s continue to a look at some more of the striking imagery in iconic movie posters.

    E.T. (1982)

From Steven Spielberg, this wonder of a movie was a beautiful, poignant work of art. Starring a young Drew Barrymore, the movie made us all appreciate the extraterrestrial and fall in love with it.

    Much like the poster .

    Split (2016)

M Night Shyamalan’s Split, saw him make a return to form. Starring a superlative James McAvoy as a man with DID, with 23 personalities living inside him, the movie was a thriller, & a surprise sequel to Unbreakable.

The poster is minimalistic & perfectly gets the theme across.

    Awara (The Vagabond) (1951)

This classic in Indian Cinema from actor director Raj Kapoor, also starring Nargis, was a huge hit & also did well in foreign markets.

In the era of hand painted posters, this one, like the movie, is a classic.

    Babel (2006)

This solid movie from Alejandro Innaritu, starring an international cast including Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, has a poster that reflects its themes of isolation, miscommunication and inadvertent destinies, reflecting the story of the Tower of Babel.

    Aaranya Kaandam (Jungle Chapter) (2010)

This 2010 movie, from Tamil film maverick Thiagarajan Kumararaja, is a gangster film told most whimsically, the director not shying away from his influences, Quentin Tarantino & Guy Ritchie, amongst others. And yet it’s an entirely original, marvelous piece of work.

The poster is equally striking, stark in its use of colors to leave maximum impact.

  • Iconic Movie Posters -1

A movie poster is perhaps the first look (and in the olden days, perhaps the only look) the audience has at what they should expect from a new movie. Now of course, we have teasers, trailers to trailers and what not.

In this article, let’s take a look at some of the striking imagery in iconic movie posters.

    A Clockwork Orange (1971)

From maverick Stanley Kubrick, this movie was genius, divisive & controversial.

The poster is a work of art, perfectly showing the deranged state of mind of Alex, and his ultraviolence.

    Tenet (2020)

This film from modern master Christopher Nolan proved to be a mind bender once again.

And this poster fully reflects the notion of forward and inverted time that the movie dwells into.

Ardh Satya (The Half Truth) (1983)

This hard hitting film by Govind Nehalini, one of Indian Cinema’s leading directors in the parallel movement, has an equally hard hitting poster. Harsh, raw, bubbling with anger. Like the film.

    Dil Se (1998)

This beautiful, poignant film from Mani Ratnam, about love and its seven stages, and the tragedy that is the fate of its lovers, has a heartbreaking poster, all the emotions in the film coming together in one still image.

    2046 (2004)

2046, auteur Wong Kar Wai’s seminal work, has a gorgeous, gorgeous poster, evoking the deep reds and saturated greens of the movie, with its leads in a passionate, wistful embrace that is there, but perhaps, isn’t.

  • Thangalaan | A short review

Here’s my short review of Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan starring Chiyaan Vikram, Parvathy and Malavika Mohanan.

  • Movie Recommendations

    Rebecca Hall in The Gift

    The Gift |

Watch on Prime Video | Netflix

Starring Rebecca Hall, Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton (who also directs), The Gift, is a beautifully shot, moody, psychological thriller that is slow burn and pays off great rewards if you wait it out till the end.

The story follows a middle-aged couple (Bateman and Hall) who move into a suburban house, only to come across a long lost acquaintance (Edgerton, playing a typically socially awkward character with heart) at a local store.

But is there more to it than meets the eye?

Edgerton’s character gets deeper and deeper into the couple’s lives, at times in strange, startling ways, and as the movie unfolds we discover the whys.

It’s a great, relatively lesser known film, available for streaming on Prime Video and/or Netflix.

A sure shot recommendation! Enjoy your time streaming!

  • Promising New Trailers

With film and OTT content dropping online one after the other, let’s take a look at some of the new trailers that look truly promising.

    Kottukkaali (The Adamant Girl)

P S Vinothraj’s second film, after the excellent Koozhangal (Pebbles), stars Anna Ben and Soori (after his roles in Viduthalai and Garudan, the comedic actor is a force to be reckoned with in the dramatic space).

The trailer is cut with no background score, just sounds, and we see a group of people traveling across rural Tamil Nadu with a silent girl in tow, with no true reveal of the story.

    It’s exciting, new and original.

    Watch the trailer here.

    Trap

Though the movie is already out this week, this trailer is worth mentioning here.

M Night Shyamalan’s back. And how. Set in a concert where a serial killer is trapped with his daughter, the trailer promises a battle of wits between Josh Hartnett, who plays the serial killer (no spoilers here!) and the law enforcement, looking to fish him out.

Expect some taut moments and some signature Shyamalan twists.

    Watch the trailer here.

    Kanguva (Tamil, Hindi, other languages)

This new film from Siva, produced by Studio Green looks spectacular.

Starring Suriya and Bobby Deol (what a career comeback he’s having after Animal), this is a period drama on the lines of Apocalypto and Baahubali (strange mix I know, but look at the trailer!), with some exciting action.

    Watch the trailer here.

    Khel Khel Mein

This Akshay Kumar vehicle, that finds him returning to comedy where he’s been largely successful even amongst a recent spate of flops, also stars Fardeen Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Vaani Kapoor amongst others.

A remake once again (of the Italian film Perfect Strangers), the premise seems interesting and if done well, should do well with audiences.

    Watch the trailer here.
